German Kriegsmarine Officers Mess Battleship Gneisenau Photograph Rouen 1944
Now I just had to rescue this.. From the Officer's Mess at the German Imperial Navy HQ at Rouen, is this original framed photograph of the Kriegsmarine Battleship "Gneisenau". The photograph depicts Gneisenau sailing past the German state vessel "Grille", hosting Adolf Hitler and the Regent of Hungary, Admiral Miklós Horthy, during a Fleet Parade on August 22, 1938, in Kiel Harbor (Kiel Fjord). Within the framed photograph, which is titled in German and translates to, "Battleship Gneisenau in a Fleet Parade" is a hand written note, which reads..
Captured at the HQ Officers Mess, German Imperial Navy, Rouen 1944. Presented to mein host Charles by Capt R. It's in the original solid oak frame that measures 27" x 21" and has some water staining to the lower half, which is a shame but is still a great find all the same, especially as it once hung within the Kriegsmarine Officers mess at Rouen.
