

The typed letter which contains historic content, is a postwar souvenir transcript originally sent by general Alfred Jodl to Admiral Karl Donitz during the last few days of World War II. It was only a few days earlier, on April 30, 1945, Hitler committed suicide in his bunker and named Admiral Karl Donitz as his successor. The letter is dated 6th May 1945, to Grand Admiral Karl Donitz and reads as follows,''General Eisenhower insists we sign today, otherwise Allied lines will be closed even to persons attempting to surrender individually and negotiations broken off, see no alternative to chaos or signature. Request immediate radio confirmation whether authorization for signing the capitulation he put into effect.
Hostilities will then cease on 9 May 0001 hours our time''. The letter is signed''Donitz'' and dated''3 6 79'' in blue felt pen. Admiral Karl Donitz [1891 1980] was a German Naval Commander during World War II, who attained the rank of Grand Admiral and was appointed as Commander in Chief of all submarines. He was credited with implementing the submarine tactic Rudeltaktik, commonly called wolfpack.On April 30, 1945, in accordance with Hitler's last will and testament he was named President of Germany and Commander of all German Forces. On May 6, 1945, he ordered the surrender of all German forces thus ending World War II in Europe. After the war he was found guilty''crimes against peace'' at the Nuremberg Trials and was sentenced to ten years in prison and was released in 1956.

In 1939 he was promoted to Supreme Commander of the Kriegmarine's U-boat Arm where he planned and led the U-boat war against the Allies in the North Atlantic.In 1943, he was appointed to the rank of Grand Admiral of the Navy and served in this position until the death of Adolf Hitler on April 30, 1945. On May 7, 1945, Donitz ordered the surrender of all German forces to the Allied powers. In 1946, Donitz was convicted of war crimes and was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment. The display has been professionally triple matted in a blue/green linen outer matte and accented with a gold and a black inner matte.
