13 Original WWII German Naval Photos - Toulon Fleet Wrecks / TA 9 - Kriegsmarine Associated Lot. Original period WWII naval photo lot consisting of 13 photographs. Includes 12 small original photos of wrecked French warships at Toulon. Includes 1 larger original photo identified on the reverse as TA 9.
The large photo shows TA 9, the former French Bombarde, later Italian FR 41, then German TA 9. The reverse of the large photo is handwritten Toulon - TA 9 - 16. Sicherungsflottille - Toulon - Süd-Frankreich. Historically, the French fleet at Toulon was scuttled on 27 November 1942 to avoid German capture, and many of the small photos show the aftermath of those wrecks in harbor. TA 9 is documented as the former French Bombarde, later renamed FR 41 by the Italians and then TA 9 by the Germans; public references place her at Toulon and note she was later sunk there in an air raid on 23 August 1944. 12 small photos measure approximately 3 1/2" x 2 1/4". 1 large photo measures approximately 3 1/2" x 5 1/4". Backs of the small photos are mostly dated/annotated in period hand. The larger photo has a fuller reverse caption tying it to TA 9 and 6. The large TA 9 photo has a small tear at the top edge / noon position. The small photo of Algérie has a small rip. Several photos show edge wear, corner wear, light creasing, and surface marks. A few photos show more wear than others, but the group remains very displayable. All are original period photographs, not modern reprints. Please review all photos carefully for exact condition and details. Why this lot stands out. Better than a generic naval photo group because the lot is identified, captioned, and centered on a major WWII naval event.Combines French fleet wreck imagery with a German-identified TA 9 photo.
